The Teatro Massimo in Palermo was built in 1864 and designed by Basile and is the largest opera house in Italy. Within the opera house's royal apartment, it was a detail of the wooden panelling that Cassandra interpreted as the lines of a musical score,and this was the direct inspiration for the design.
