Small Cowrie shell studs in silver. Inspired by the cowries on the beach in Cornwall.
Each earrring measures approximately 7x5mm.
Cowries have been collected for millennia: African tribes in the Omo valley of Ethiopia decorate themselves with strings of Cowrie shells, children find them on the beaches of Norfolk and Cornwall and in Japan they are often made into their beautiful Netsuke . They are treasures to all peoples and for some have been an early form of currency: shell money! The Cowrie design was one of Cassandra's earliest designs using shells collected from a Cornish beach and she continues to collect them wherever she travels.
Silver is the most malleable of metals and when freshly polished takes a mirror like shine. As a gemmologist, the chemical composition and properties of
gemstones have always fascinated Cassandra. Ever in search of the
unusual and rare, she travels the world to source beautiful
gemstones, either in the rough or cut form. The craftsman works as
an artist recreating the design in metal, his interpretation is
vital to the overall feel of the jewel. The jewel is then mounted,
assayed , polished and set. Many of Cassandra's jewels can be hand
engraved with a personal message to make a unique bespoke gift.
