Frida 9ct yellow gold earring pendants set with blue topaz on 9ct yellow gold Astrea hoops. The design echoes a basket rich with jewels. It was Lupe (Marin) who showed Frida (Kahlo) how to take lunch to Diego (Rivera) in a basket in the same way Mexican campesinos take their husband's lunch to them in the fields. From the Journey to Mexico.
These earrings are part of Cassandra's interchangeable collection. If you already own jewels from this collection and only wish to buy part of the earring shown, please contact the showroom on 0207 730 2202.
Frida Kahlo, Diego River and their on-off love affair is legendary. Diego, like any good Mexican loved his food, so Frida would take him his lunch, beautifully prepared, everyday in a basket. I wanted to capture their story in a jewel, so I created a golden basket, with a handle across the top and I placed, carefully, set jewels inside: blue topaz, citrines and tourmalines and more.
Topaz is an Aluminum fluoro- hyrdroxyl- silicate that occurs in large crystals mostly in Brazil. Its slightly turquoise blue hue, is similar to that of aquamarine. It is perhaps this colour that makes it the stone symbolising friendship and love, honest and fidelity. It is the birthstone for November.
All Cassandra Goad Jewellery is designed and made in our workshops in London.
Ever in search of the unusual and rare, Cassandra travels the world to source beautiful gemstones, either in the rough or cut form.
The craftsman works as an artist recreating the design in metal. The jewel is then mounted, assayed, polished and set.
