Frida small necklace pendant in 18ct yellow gold set with an oval facetted blue aquamarine and pave set with diamonds. The design echoes a basket rich with jewels. It was Lupe (Marin) who showed Frida (Kahlo) how to take lunch to Diego (Rivera) in a basket in the same way Mexican campesinos take their husband's lunch to them in the fields. From the Journey to Mexico.

The pendant is shown here on an Isla chain.

Frida

Frida Kahlo, Diego River and their on-off love affair is legendary. Diego, like any good Mexican loved his food, so Frida would take him his lunch, beautifully prepared, everyday in a basket. I wanted to capture their story in a jewel, so I created a golden basket, with a handle across the top and I placed, carefully, set jewels inside: blue topaz, citrines and tourmalines and more.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine with its hues of blue and green is known as the sailor's gem ensuring safe travels across the seas. It is the birthstone for March. The colour in aquamarine is due to the presence of iron in the beryl crystal lattice with the most important deposits being found throughout Brazil as well as in Africa where the colours of blue can almost be a pungent blue.
