Cassandra visited the monastery known as 'New Valamo' in Finland (founded in 1940 when the monks were forced to evacuate the old monastery in Russian Karelia) when she was researching this collection. In the back of the monastery she saw some old wooden pews - that the monks had brought with them from Russia - with a circular pattern pierced out on the back of the pew with, at its centre, a cross. The tecnique of piercing to create a pattern intrigued her and so back in her workshop in London she experimented with recreating this effect. Her Valaam cross (in two sizes) is the design that she created. From the Journey to Scandinavia.
