AGORA LOGO BLACK AND WHITE

Greek Souvlaki in London: Agora

On a busy day in London Bridge’s Borough Market, you could easily miss the dark wood door of Agora. The only tell-tale sign that behind it is the latest restaurant destination is the regular queue of people patiently waiting to get a taste of Agora’s array of spreads, flatbreads and skewers.

One half of the twin-pack of Greek restaurants set up by David Carter, Agora is the relaxed, unfussy counterpart to her more refined sister Oma (located just above). Agora, the Greek for ‘market’, may be unpretentious (paper napkins, cutlery in pots) but its vibe in the evening is undeniable. Dimmed lighting and an array of house music, will make you feel undeniably youthful (but thankfully you do have a seat!).

Serving an interesting selection of wines, including many Greek options, Agora also offers a delicious selection of cocktails. For those not drinking, do not miss the apricot and ginger soda.

When ordering, be sure to indulge in plenty of the spreads. While the entire menu is packed with flavour, Agora truly shines with its selection of dips. Puffed flatbreads, fresh from the wood-fired oven, serve as the perfect vessel for these flavourful creations. A standout is the chard borani with crispy garlic - a luscious, Persian-inspired dip made from perfectly wilted Swiss chard. A generous drizzle of chive oil enhances its rich, velvety texture, while crispy garlic adds a savoury depth that makes every bite irresistible.

A souvla bar wouldn’t be complete without an array of skewers (souvla meaning ‘skewer’ in Greek). Whether you are vegetarian or not, the mushroom and spring onion skewer is not to be missed. Glazed with aged soy and honey, Agora introduces Asian flavours to a traditional Greek dish, creating an interesting fusion.

Of course, can any Greek meal ever be complete without a Greek salad (Agora serves theirs with carob rusks and galomizithra cheese) or a bowl of hearty beans (choose from slow cooked cannellini or fava)? - I think not!

Agora can be found at 2-4 Bedale Street SE1 9AL.

Agora is open Monday – Saturday 12 – 11pm, Sunday 12 – 10pm. Reservations available for those wanting to skip the (often long) queue.

Dinner for two people including drinks and dessert approx. £80
