Inside Hagia Sophya in Constantinople, the beautiful old Justinianic mosaic walls of 1260s were painted over in 1453 when it was converted to a mosque. Later, they were uncovered again in 1847. It was up on the higher levels that Cassandra saw an interesting motif painted over a section of mosaic. She began to sketch out the four pearshapes ( to be set with facetted stones ) within the square enamelled design as a brooch or centrepiece for a necklace. To echo the colours of the mosaics she decided to use various colours of enamel and she also set small diamonds into the design. From the journey to Turkey.
