The Return of the Bayeux Tapestry

After almost 1,000 years, the Bayeux Tapestry is finally returning to England.

From September 2026 to July 2027, the 70-metre-long embroidery will be exhibited at the British Museum in what is already being described as one of the most significant cultural moments in recent British Museum history.

Its arrival feels less like a conventional exhibition and more like a shift in perspective. For the first time, the story it tells returns to the country it reshaped, its long strip of linen unfolding not far from where the consequences of 1066 still quietly echo.

Timed to coincide with the approaching 1,000th anniversary of the Norman Conquest, the exhibition forms part of a wider programme of UK-France cultural exchanges and activations. This feels like a rare opportunity to encounter one of the medieval world’s greatest surviving works in person.

The Tapestry was likely commissioned by a Norman patron and made by English embroiderers, using manuscript drawings from Canterbury. As a visual record of the 11th century, the tapestry offers an unusually vivid glimpse into medieval life. The stitched figures move with an almost cinematic rhythm, carrying tension, movement, and emotion across centuries. It feels less like a static artefact and more like a story still unfolding.
