Matilda Goad's Festive Wish List

Matilde Goad press photo

Matilda Goad, founder of MG&Co. and a champion of cosy, considered design, shares the festive rituals, stocking fillers and family traditions that make her Christmas feel truly magical.

The perfect practical gift for a stocking?

I love products with a sense of purpose and as I’ve got older, I have found that pieces really have to justify themselves to live within my home. We created the nickel and brass matchbox sleeves at my brand MG&Co. for this reason. The jewelled style that launches this month is my favourite and once you have one, a box of cooks matches never feels the same!

What is your favourite Christmas tradition?

Growing up, no Christmas was complete without a game of charades, but as my own young family is evolving, new traditions are beginning to fall into place. Over the last few years, they have been given a new pair of cotton poplin pyjamas on Christmas Eve, and it’s very sweet seeing them wake up on the day in matching sets.

At home or abroad for the festive season?

The last few years we’ve been with family, but I’m very excited to be hosting for the first time at home this year and I can’t wait to go to town on decorations!

The Cassandra Goad jewel on your wish list?

The Severine Large Ring in yellow gold - I saw Cassandra wearing this and thought it was the chicest thing ever. I love how oversized it is.

Hands crossed over with different Cassandra Goad Severine cocktail rings on each finger.

What is your role on Christmas day?

My husband takes charge of all the cooking duties, so I’m focused on creating the feel of the house (and trying to tidy up as we go!).

The perfect edible addition to any stocking?

It has to be chocolate coins and a tangerine.

A nostalgic or frivolous addition for your stocking?

The little red fortune fish are always fun and get everyone giggling.

A little luxury?

Cashmere socks.

What is your Quality Street chocolate pick?

The green triangle.

Best part of a Christmas feast?

Bread sauce - the only time of year I ever have it, and it’s too delicious!

Your go to gift

I always think a potted paperwhite makes a divine hostess gift, dressed with hazel twigs for structure and placed in a lovely terracotta pot.

How do you battle the post-Christmas-feast slump?

Fresh air and a walk - usually accompanied by my children’s new toys!

Your favourite way to give back during the festive season?

Throughout the year, my team and I volunteer at a food bank in London, and as we head into the colder, harsher months, it feels even more necessary to offer our hands and time to support the running of these instrumental charities that rely so heavily on volunteers.
