The Ancient Amphitheatre of Epidavros
Set in the hills of the Peloponnese, the ancient site of Epidavros offers one of the clearest connections to Greece’s past. Known for its sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, it was once a place people travelled to for both medicine and ritual.

At the centre of the site is the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros, built in the 4th century BC. It is still remarkably preserved, with its stone seating rising in a near-perfect curve. The acoustics are precise enough that even the smallest sounds carry from the stage to the highest rows. This UNESCO World Heritage Site inspired Cassandra’s Epidavros design, which pays homage to its continued story, placing a pearl at the centre of her ridged and circular design that reflects the fourteen thousand seats the amphitheatre originally had.
Today, the amphitheatre is not just a monument. As part of the Athens Epidavros Festival, performances continue to take place throughout the summer. Ancient dramas by Sophocles and Euripides are staged alongside contemporary works, allowing the space to be experienced as it was intended. If you are travelling through mainland Greece this summer, Epidavros is worth the visit.
